The MOSFET gate is switched on and off to bypass its body diode during the of the conduction period to minimize power dissipation, remaining off during the blocking period.

The drain to source voltage is accurately sensed to determine the direction and magnitude of the current allowing the IR1161 to turn the MOSFET on and off
